We’ve Got Your Back
You sit in desks
I stand in front of them
I teach
You learn
I talk
You listen
Until you’re talking
And can’t hear me
You want to skirt the rules,
To hijack the class
Waste my time
Anything but having
To really learn
Annoyance
Exasperation
Infuriation
Proceed from step to step
Me reacting to you
Sometimes we stand in opposition
One of me standing by pretense of authority
Over two dozen of you
And yet
The principal’s in the room
You sit there quietly
Listen attentively
Follow directions
You never have to say it
Your actions speak
We’re in this together, Teacher Man
And this time
We’ve got your back.
I love it. Not over thinking. If I can’t write today, I am glad you wrote this. I am proud of you. This is now among my favorites. See what happens when you let go and write? sigh. Amazing.
x,
Becca

Good piece, but I cannot decide how many “sides” there are in this one – and I’ve added them up several times already: you, an individual student, the class (or some of the class/most of the class?), the principal er , sorry start again …
