T-20: Write Now

March 18, 2013

Yes, I skipped the weekend. I did write my latest post at Lady or Not… Here I Come! And I wrote a poem for Lavinia. But mostly I was in a post-testing, pre-Spring Break haze. I promised that I would write a new post tonight even though I’ve got nothing. If a gun were held to my head I’m sure I would crank out something, but lacking such adrenaline boosters, where does one find inspiration when there is nothing immediately present to inspire? William Stafford, in “A Way of Writing,” wrote that “A writer is not so much someone who has something to say as he is someone who has found a process that will bring about new things he would not have thought of if he had not started to say them.” It’s a matter of receptivity; being open to whatever the world will offer you…

“To get started I will accept anything that occurs to me. Something always occurs, of course, to any of us. We can’t keep from thinking. Maybe I have to settle for an immediate impression: it’s cold, or hot, or dark, or bright, or in between! Or well, the possibilities are endless. If I put down something, that thing will help the next thing come, and I’m off. If I let the process go on, things will occur to me that were not at all in my mind when I started. These things, odd or trivial as they may be, are somehow connected. And if I let them string out, surprising things will happen.”

These are how thoughts proceed in my mind, like the spreading lattice of ice crystals when they touch upon one another, or distinct tiny ripples when raindrops hit the surface of a lake that then expand and join with each other. That is, when I am awake enough to think like that, which I am not right now. Another time soon…

Your title makes me think of a song, but the title eludes me. Although the chorus sings.. “right about now.. the funks so brother…check it out now.. the funks so brother…” I’m sure you know the one. Just wanted to share. lol

That would be outstanding 🙂 Though I have plenty of your past writing to catch up with!

Great job Jason. I feel much like that. I would never even think of half the stuff I write, if I didn’t have a goal to write in the first place. Writing is a gift that takes me to new heights.
