B is for…

April 2, 2013

B is for Becca and baseball, though the former would likely prefer not to be included in any sentence with the latter.

P1000044Becca comes with another B, Best Friend. Sometimes people walk into your life at precisely the moment you need them most. As 2011 drew to a close, I was slowly spiraling into darkness. Through fairly random chance, I encountered a being of light. Perhaps we needed each other at the time, but I believe that should I live half a century more, I can never give back to her what she gave to me in a few short months while my marriage dissolved and life became a mere shadow of what I had known. I can’t see how I’ve been worthy of such patience as she’s continued to give me, but one of many things she has taught me is the value of simple gratitude. Many of you may have been directed here from her Best Blog in the Universe, Lady or Not… Here I Come!, but if you’ve paid her a visit, stop denying yourself now!

B is also for Baseball, which began its new season yesterday. I enjoy most major sports, but baseball holds a transcendent place in my heart. Perhaps it was growing up with my Dad watching the Braves back when they were on TBS every night because Ted Turner owned them. I was 16 when they reversed years of being a laughingstock of the National League in ultimately losing one of the most epic World Series against the Twins. Four years later, I was 20 when they finally brought the first championship of any sport to my native Atlanta, and continued on to a decade of brilliance beyond that. In 2002 I moved to Colorado and began to follow the moribund Rockies, whose greatest appeal to me at the time was their black-and-purple color scheme. Then came a historic run from mid-September to late October in 2007, when the little team that could reeled off victories in 21 of 22 games to reach the World Series.I Live for This!

At the time, I was early in my second year of teaching. I was an English major, and had always planned on being an English teacher, but I was hired to teach both language arts and social studies in my first job; apparently I wasn’t quite good enough, because for my second year, I was moved to being exclusively a social studies teacher. I was out of my depth and far out of my comfort zone. I stumbled through every day. First period was my planning hour that year, and I remember frantically pulling a semblance of a lesson together minutes beforehand, and mornings where I locked myself in a staff bathroom for a quarter hour or more, simply staring in the mirror and wondering how the hell I was ever going to do this. Silly as it sounds, the astounding success of the Rockies that fall, the remarkable run that no one could believe, motivated and inspired me to believe that such unexpected glory lied within myself as well.

There’s so much more I could say on both these subjects, but I will close with one finally B: Believe. For what this incredible person and beloved game have in common is that they both, in their very different but both invaluable ways, made me Believe; Believe in myself and Believe in possibilities beyond.

Well, Becca’s alright, I guess, but you nailed it with baseball!!! Too bad you’re a Rockies fan (sorry for the troll, but it’s part of the game, right)?

What I meant to say was that Becca is alright, I guess “;-)”!
You see, the smiley emoticon makes the statement funny. Ha ha, I’m funny, see?

You lost me at baseball (I’m a basketball fan myself) but even with that glaring admission, this was an awesome post. And a great picture of the two of you!

Basketball is alright, but it doesn’t feel now like its glory days in the early 90s that I remember. I did get to go to a Nuggets-Lakers playoff game last year and that was pretty awesome. And thanks on the picture; I was lucky just to bask in her glow.

Sorry, but whenever I hear of the Rockies, I think of the Dumb and Dumber line “that John Denver was full of sh*t.” I’m sure that magical run in 2007 must have been pretty exciting, though. I remember I would keep hearing about it on Baseball Tonight and think “holy crap, they did it AGAIN!” Of course, no baseball season can top the Braves worst-to-first year. In terms of excitement, I’d put it even ahead of their championship.

Becca’s alright too. I guess I got carried away talking baseball. I’m just excited that the season is underway. I even got to watch the Braves’ opener (like you, I remember the days back when all of their games were televised).

I’m actually old enough to remember when WTBS was Channel 17, a local UHF station in Atlanta, when CNN and TNT et.al. were but a twinkle in Ted’s eye. Then there was cable, and we also got WGN, which in those days showed every Cubs game with Harry Caray three sheets to the wind by the time he was singing Take Me Out to the Ballgame. Funny thing was, in the 80s the Braves were abysmal and the Cubs actually had some of their best days.
I watched the Braves opener too, and was thrilled they had Dale Murphy in the booth. He really makes me remember my childhood.

There’s no true comparison, of course, but I think of it as I wouldn’t begrudge her Dexter, Boardwalk Empire, The Walking Dead, etc. Sports is ultimately just entertainment, but it does hold a unique power in American culture to create a civic bond, a collective zeitgeist.

That being said, she’s the only one who I’d give it up for if she asked 😀

Yeah, I am not drugged anymore. I am glad, I swear I hate that stuff. I can’t understand why people take it for fun.

He is very sweet to me. I know you feel very much the same about Miss Peach. Isn’t it wonderful to have such great friends?

Yeah, I miss Miss Peach, even tho we are an ocean apart, when she was in the US was easier to keep in touch, but since she was exiled to Costa Rica is harder to talk on the daily basis. Her and Jason are proof that teachers are people too lol
Ohh and btw, after Costa Rica Miss Peach is moving to Austin…….
